The citizens are always happy, everyone is kind, and they are incredibly developed in regards to technology as well.
“The One Who Walk Away From Omelas” is about a town named Omelas where life is perfect. Those who walk away from Omelas represent the people in the world who stand up against wrongdoings and who are willing to take the hard path in order to do the right thing.I just finished reading the short story, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, and despite being less than ten pages (at least, it took up only 9 pages in the collection I picked up from the library), it put forth some very interesting themes! Namely, it digs into the nature in which we view happiness as well as how we define and defend our morality. The story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas,” represents how many humans chose to take the easiest path, even if they know deep down inside that it is the wrong thing to do. As human beings, we all have emotional struggles, guilt, and tough decisions to make.
The fact that the citizens of Omelas struggle with the guilt of living happily while the child suffers represents the way that all humans experience moral and ethical struggles within their life. The people who walk away from Omelas represent the moral and ethical struggle that all people encounter at some point in their life. Every once in a while, someone will leave Omleas, and they are called the ‘ones who walk away,’ which refers to the title of the story. Yet, most citizens chose to stay in Omelas and ignore the suffering of the child. When a child becomes a certain age, they are told about the suffering child, and often struggle with the emotions and guilt within this situation.
The only exception to this perfect world is that in order for everyone in Omelas to have a perfect life, one child must suffer and live alone in dark and dirty conditions. The perfect world that these people live in represent the life that all people in the world would want to live because they have few worries or fears, and they live a good life within Omelas. In the short story, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” by Ursula LeGuin, a story is told about a town that represents the perfect world, where everyone is happy, healthy, and lives a good life.
